Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AutoFill passwords feature work?

In order to use AutoFill Passwords from Wallet Guard you first need to enable it in the iOS settings under AutoFill Passwords. Then open Wallet Guard to allow it to sync your current passwords. If you use biometrics to login, the first time you use AutoFill Passwords you will still need to provide your passcode. After this initial setup, Wallet Guard will keep any new or updated passwords in sync with the AutoFill feature.

How does Wallet Guard check Passwords?

Wallet Guard uses k-anonymity against the Have I Been Pwned API to test if passwords have been compromised. You can learn more about how this is done without revealing your password here: blog.cloudflare.com/validating-leaked-passwords-with-k-anonymity and here haveibeenpwned.com
To test your passwords click the new shield icon in the password field. Available in version 10.0 of Wallet Guard.

How does Face ID and Touch ID work in Wallet Guard?

In Wallet Guard you can enable biometrics in the settings menu if you have a Touch ID or Face ID capable device. If you do not, the option will be disabled. You must still setup your wallet with a passcode that is used to encrypt your data, if you enable biometrics then this passcode will be stored in Apple's keychain securely. Face ID and Touch ID are a convenience that allows you to login with your face or fingerprint, but your passcode is still used to encrypt your data and can be used to unlock your wallet regardless if biometrics is enabled or not. If you turn off biometrics your passcode will be removed from the keychain. If you change your passcode only the new passcode will be stored in the keychain if you have biometrics enabled. If you restore a database that was created with a different passcode you will need to toggle biometrics off and on to get the new passcode in the keychain.

Why does wallet guard have ads?

Wallet Guard has been free for some time. The ads will help to keep Wallet Guard updated. As of version 9.0 you can subscribe to remove ads for 1 year. Subscribing also disables tracking from MoPub analytics. See: User Privacy

Why do I see a black screen when I try to take a picture?

Go to Wallet Guard in the iOS settings and ensure that it has access to the camera.

How can I backup my wallet?

In Wallet Guard you can link your Dropbox account and backup to Dropbox.  Wallet Guard will only have access to the Wallet Guard App folder on you Dropbox drive.  The data it stores there is encrypted.  You can then restore your backup at any time, even to another device such as your iPad.  It is recommended that you backup whenever you add new entries or change your passcode.

To backup your wallet entries in Apple's iCloud go to Settings -> iCloud -> Manage Storage -> Backups -> Your Device -> Ensure backup is enabled for Wallet Guard.  You can also send your entries to a nearby device running Wallet Guard.

How can I transfer a wallet entry from one device to another?

Since Wallet Guard 12.2, you can use AirDrop to share a wallet entry with another device running Wallet Guard 12.2 or newer. Ensure the other device is on and has AirDrop enabled and accepting connections. Navigate to the details of the wallet entry you want to share, and AirDrop it.

To send another entry repeat the steps. To send all entries between your own devices you can use Dropbox backup and restore. Wallet Guard doesn’t have an auto sync feature between devices.

What does the star feature do?

The 'star' feature in Wallet Guard allows you to mark a card photo or barcode as a favorite. When you do this the next time you open that wallet entry it will automatically navigate to view mode of your starred photo. This allows you to quickly show cards or barcodes at checkout.
(iPhone 5 users note you may have to touch a little to the left of the star)

Can I use a credit card saved in Wallet Guard at a store?

Wallet Guard will not let you directly use a Credit Card unless the store is willing to take the number.  We store these types of cards securely so if you lost your real wallet you would have the information needed to cancel.  You can also look it up if you wanted to use it online.  We hope that someday we can integrate with Apple Pay. Cards that do have barcodes such as reward cards are scan-able in stores (assuming they have a newer type of scanner, if not they can usually just type in the number).

What types of barcode readers work?

Not all stores have updated barcode readers that work with mobile phones.  The laser technology will not work with the phone.  Only a CMOS/CCD scanner will be able to read the phone (we recommend 80% screen brightness for best results).  If a barcode will not scan, the clerk can usually just punch in the number.

I forgot my passcode, how do I get it back?

Only you know your passcode.  We have no way to retrieve it.  That's part of the strong encryption Wallet Guard provides you.  If this happens to you, and you want to continue using Wallet Guard you will have to delete it and reload it from the App Store with the same Apple ID so you will not be charged again.  You will need to reload all your wallet entries.

Can I make my own categories?

Yes, if you don't see the category you are looking for you can quickly add it by typing into the category field on any entry or hitting the plus sign in the category field.  Your custom categories will be removed when there are no longer any entries in that category.

How can I edit my photos?

In the wallet entry details just tap the picture to enter edit mode. From there you can adjust gamma correction, crop, rotate, and delete.

How can I view my card/barcode fullscreen?

In the wallet entry details just tap the view link above your photo for a fullscreen view without edit controls. You can also pinch to zoom and pan on this screen (V3.3).

What's the best barcode scanning technique?

  1. Place the barcode on a flat solid surface
  2. Make sure you have good light
  3. Steadily hold the back facing camera about 4 to 6 inches from the code until it comes into focus and scans (if the scan doesn't happen right away try moving the camera closer or farther away)

Does my information get stored on your servers?

We don't have any servers. Wallet Guard encrypts all your data with the passcode you provide (so don't lose it), and stores it locally on your device. If you choose, you can go in the settings of the iPhone and have it backed up to iCloud. Or you may choose to link your Dropbox account. In either case, all you wallet entries remain encrypted with your passcode.

Can I scan QR codes with Wallet Guard?

Yes, and if it happens to point to a website, that field will be populated so you can navigate there directly.

How can I edit a card picture?

To edit a card picture simply tap the image in the detail view to bring it into edit mode. It is recommended that you save your image first so you can cancel out if you don't like your changes. In the edit view you can adjust gamma correction to make the card more readable, crop in tightly around your card, rotate the image, delete the image, and nudge it down on the left or right to straighten out a crooked image (note: if you nudge the image too much it may get distorted).

Upgrade Notes: Wallet Guard 7.3 upgraded to the Dropbox API v2. As a result you will need to re-link your Dropbox account. More information
Be sure to backup your phone before upgrading to a new version.

You may have to toggle biometrics off and on after upgrading.
